This weekend Nolan competed in regional academic decathlon. He has been studying for weeks with little sleep and a lot of preparation. He was first on his team to do the Super-quiz (which was about biological evolution, yuck) for his team of nine students, and I know he was nervous. It was a two-day process, in which there are about ten different tests that they take, ranging from Math, Art, Music, with an impromptu speech and formal interview. He was hoping to place better personally, but it is an honor to be on the team and I am soooooo proud of him. He has a God-given talent of a mastermind and I am happy to see him use it!
Mountain View placed second overall (Red Mountain was first, drat!) out of about thirty schools locally, and they are now in the competition to compete for state and nationals. It was an interesting experience for him and bonding for them as a team. The coaches were amazing as they have encouraged, cooked, studied, quizzed and given a lot of moral support for these kids.
There will be a lot of studying going on for the next couple of months, they even do a studying retreat in Pinetop away from everything that could distract them. I am hoping for an experience that will make all his hard work seem worthwhile, but even if that is not the case, that the effort put forth will be a reward unto itself.
